52 Week Photography Challenge - Week 15

Week 15

Composition: Rule of Space

Your subject should be facing the frame, walking into the frame, this keeps your subject "in" the frame and engaging with it. Give your subject room to move.

Camera Panasonic DMC-GF3 with Panasonic 12-32mm

Settings:

  • Shutter Speed: 1/1250 sec
  • Aperture: f/4
  • ISO: 800
  • Focal Length: 12mm

I feel like I have to confess. This week I did not get out either camera much. In fact, I didn't even touch the Canon and I didn't carry the Panasonic every day. But that doesn't mean I didn't take any photos. We went to the Kentucky Science Center on Monday and had a great time playing there. I even broke out the GoPro! The thought of editing video overwhelms me at times, especially when I know I'm not going to do anything with it. But who knows, you might see a short video!

Anyway, back to the task at hand!

This week's prompt was a little challenging to me. Typically in my style of photography I am focused solely on the subject or up close on my subject. It was a good prompt for me. It made me think about the scene as a whole and telling the entire story. This type of photo answers questions like Who?, What?, and Where? more easily than a closer photo would allow. I think that it's important to keep in mind when telling a story. Without context, the image may not carry as much weight.

With this image, it's easy to see who is in the photo, what he is doing, and where he is. As the prompt suggested, he's interacting with the frame and things in the frame, and he has all sorts of space he can move around in. This prompt made me thing about a previous prompt about negative space. But it's different in the fact that the open space isn't full of nothingness.

It's a simple photo, yet complex. Some might say it's busy. The lines of the porch pull your eyes in the direction of the sun, the brightness and flares of the sun draw your eyes to it too, but the light in the grass takes your eyes right back to Daniel. At the time, I didn't think much about this photo, but once I got to really look at it and study it, I like it more. Even as I type this I'm liking it more.

Photos from the week

This photo is almost like the opposite of the prompt. There is space in the frame, but he's exiting the frame. He sure loved running around at the Science Center.

He loved playing with the binoculars or "nocs" as he called them. And of course they went down the slide!

We also visited Granny this week and played with all of the Post-It notes.

Have A Great Week!
